16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence – Day 12

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is a global initiative running from 25 November through 10 December, annually.

In Hinduism there is prevalent worship of God as Mother. Thus, each woman is considered a manifestation of the Divine Mother.

In the words of Swami Vivekananda, “It is not possible for a bird to fly on only one wing.” This statement exemplifies the belief that man and woman are two wings of the same bird, and so a man in incomplete without a woman. Furthermore, women should be given protection at every stage of life. Women are grihasta-Lakshmi, goddess of the home. If the woman cries in the home, it is taught by acharyas and sages that the marriage will be broken, the home will be broken. Hence, violence – all kinds of violence – against the woman we are in relationship with is papam – sin – in Hinduism.

This is bad karma, karma that will have to be faced in the next life, viz, Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita.
