Catalyst for Renewal & Catholics for Renewal present an evening of conversation:

The Role of Church Law in the Child Abuse Issue: Help or Hindrance?

Presenter: KIERAN TAPSELL

Responder: REV PROFESSOR IAN WATERS

Wednesday, 29 October 2014 at 7.30pm, Pumphouse Tavern, 128 Nicholson St, Fitzroy.

Kieran Tapsell is a retired lawyer with degrees in theology and law and the author of the recently published Potiphar’s Wife: The Vatican’s Secret and Child Sexual Abuse. He will share his analysis of how the code of canon law, papal decrees and secret papal instructions from Pius XI in 1922 to Benedict XVI shaped the way the Australian bishops and bishops throughout the world, responded to the clerical sexual abuse of children with tragic consequences for children, their families and the Church itself. Kieran will also outline what he sees as the necessary reforms before the Church can claim to be a credible moral voice in the modern world.

Ian Waters is an eminent canon lawyer and the Emeritus Judicial Vicar (Presiding Judge) of the Catholic Tribunal for Victorian and Tasmania. He is a senior fellow of Catholic Theological College and a member of its Department of Moral Theology and Canon Law. Ian is parish priest of St Roch’s, Glen Iris and St Cecelia’s, South Camberwell.

Spirituality in the Pub is one modest but potentially very lifegiving attempt to provide a contemporary forum – what better place than a pub! – where dialogue and conversation can emerge with transforming force. The idea is very simple. Two competent speakers share their thoughts and questions on a matter of some significance. This acts as a stimulus for good conversation. What is intended is something much richer and more transforming than mere intellectual debate or discussion can achieve. This is a gathering of God’s people. Lives can change here if we are open to the possibilities
