Made up of 16 to 25 year old Victorians from all faiths and cultural backgrounds, the MMYN advises the Victorian Government on issues affecting youth from diverse cultural, religious and linguistic communities making up Victoria. Recruits for the 2014 MMYN team are now being sought.
The MMYN is a group of highly capable, engaged and enthusiastic young people from diverse cultural, linguistic and religious backgrounds, who gather regularly to advise the Victorian Government, through the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship (OMAC) and the Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC), on issues affecting Victoria’s multicultural youth and to work on projects that build community harmony.
The MMYN supports members to develop their leadership, project management and group facilitation skills, as well as to build strong friendships and networks across different backgrounds. We are seeking applications from Victorians aged 16 to 25, who are passionate about cultural diversity and want to engage with government to make a difference in their community.
The MMYN is a valuable opportunity for young people from a variety of backgrounds to engage with government, raise the issues that matter most to them and come together to build understanding and acceptance across their faith communities.
Culturally and religiously diverse young people aged between 16 and 25, with an enthusiasm for interfaith and intercultural engagement and collaboration, are encouraged to apply for the MMYN.
The core benefit of being part of the MMYN is the ability to directly communicate with the Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship and the Victorian Government about the important issues affecting Victoria’s multicultural youth.
MMYN members are also offered special training, such as cultural and religious sensitivity training and media training. Through participating in the network meetings and other projects, members learn project management, meeting facilitation and public speaking skills. MMYN members also become more familiar with how government operates, and learn how to effectively represent their community.
Previous MMYN initiatives include:
- The annual Regional School Tour, where members of the MMYN travel to regional Victoria to discuss issues of faith, culture and identity with high school students.
- Coordinating the Ubuntu youth stage at Viva Victoria during Cultural Diversity Week, featuring music, dance and poetry performances.
- Participating in the Young People, Identity and the Media forum and the Owning Racism symposium.
