Queensland: Creators of Peace Circles

copCreators of Peace is an international women’s initiative empowering women to be radical peacebuilders. It aims to engage women in their role as creators of peace at every level of society; to pre-empt violence and despair by addressing the roots of conflict in and around us; to encourage and connect existing ‘peace builders’ and to build just, caring and inclusive communities for all. An introduction to Creators of Peace Circles will be offered at Inala Community Hall on Saturday, July 23.

Creators of Peace

The Creators of Peace (CoP) initiative was launched in 1991 at the Initiatives of Change conference centre in Caux, Switzerland by the Hon Anna Abdallah Msekwa of Tanzania, a respected politician and leader of her country’s women’s organisations. In her inaugural speech, she urged everyone to ‘create peace wherever we are, in our hearts, our homes, our workplace and our community. We all pretend that someone else is the stumbling block…Could that someone be myself?’

CoP is now a global network of people working on different continents through Creators of Peace Circles, workshops, personal encounters, community building activities and international conferences – Caux, Switzerland ’91 and ’94, India 2001, Uganda 2005 and Australia 2009. A delegation attended the UN Women’s Conference in Beijing (1995).

Creators of Peace will be celebrating its 25th anniversary with the international conference ‘Living Peace’ in the Caux Conference Centre in Switzerland.

Creators of Peace would like to invite Brisbane women to this event at the Inala Community Hall on 23 July, 2:30 to 4:30pm, details on flyer attached.

It will be a good opportunity in the best location for building bridges of trust and friendship across potential community divides. The current social context, not least the federal election, focuses on these divisions even more so in the public arena and we need to work together to heal them.

Initiatives of Change is a global movement which has been doing this kind of work over many years. Creators of Peace is one of its programs and this link to the website Creators of Peace will give you more information. People have been inspired to create peace in some of the most intractable situations through this program. In Australia, we raise funds to support the courageous Afghan women who run this program.
