Australian National Imams Council advice on Coronavirus

Australian National Imams Council
The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) is currently considering the best advice to give to Imams, Sheiks, Mosques and Islamic Communities of Australia. The situation regarding Friday Jummah is fluid, although some states have already decided not to proceed with Friday prayers. Please read on.

The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) held an urgent Muslim community national meeting last night in Sydney. An invitation was extended to 400 Imams and community leaders representing Mosques and Centres from all Australian states and territories to attend in person or online.

The national meeting was called to discuss urgent measures to be taken with regards to mosques, Islamic centres and religious gatherings during the Coronavirus Pandemic and limiting the spread of the virus in community congregations and religious gatherings.

The meeting was also attended by medical and legal experts, and decontamination and hygiene specialists.

The Australian Muslim community is taking this issue seriously and is working with health authorities and experts in containing the situation and raising awareness within the community.

A decision and statement will be made shortly in relation to Friday prayers and other gatherings. In the meantime, the following recommendations were agreed upon last night, and require YOUR urgent attention:

1. If you are unwell, or are feeling unwell, DO NOT attend the mosque, daily and Friday Prayers or any public gathering. Social isolation is critical and is a duty upon us all;

2. Avoid handshaking and hugging. Social distancing helps limit the spread of the virus;

3. Any gatherings of 500 people or more must be avoided, in accordance with an Order made yesterday by the NSW Government, under Section 7 of the Public Health Act 2010. Individuals who fail to comply could face up to six months in prison or a fine of up to $11,000 or both.

We thank all participants, Imams, community leaders and experts for their contribution and leadership during these difficult times.

We pray for the safety and well-being of all people and our country, Australia.
