Victoria: Comparative Theology Conference

The Faculty of Theology and Philosophy at Australian Catholic University is delighted to invite you to attend our upcoming Asia-Pacific Conference on Comparative Theology, Wednesday 19 July and Thursday 20 July 2017. The two-day conference will be held at Australian Catholic University, St Patrick’s campus, Melbourne.

The conference aims to explore new and creative ways of learning from and with other religions in Asia, without forsaking our own cherished beliefs and practices. We will focus on the method(s) and purpose required of such an endeavour in our mobile and pluralistic societies in the Asia-Pacific region.

We are privileged to welcome as keynote speaker Francis X Clooney SJ, Parkman Professor of Divinity, Professor of Comparative Theology and Director of the Centre for the Study of World Religions at Harvard University, along with other distinguished scholars from the Asia-Pacific region, who will offer glimpses into the practice of comparative theology within their respective contexts:

  • Professor Francis X Clooney SJ (Harvard University and ACU/FTP Distinguished Visiting Research Fellow, July 2017)
  • Professor Joseph S. O’Leary (Sophia University, Japan)
  • Fr. Dr Bagus Laksana SJ (Sanatana Dharma University, Indonesia)
  • Dr Amy Yu Fu (Zhejiang University City College, China)

Extended biographies are available on the keynote speakers page.

Dr Anita Ray and several other scholars from the Comparative Theology Reading Group at Australian Catholic University, including Fr. Dr John Dupuche, Rabbi Fred Morgan, Dr Diana Cousens and Mr Fatih Tuncer will provide updates of the development of the discipline in the Australian milieu, highlighting the importance of our regional context and offering personal reflections on the discipline.

We warmly invite all those with an interest in inter-religious learning, who wish to discover more about the theological and spiritual aspects of comparative theology and philosophy, to attend the conference.
