The Migrant Workers Centre, the Islamic Council of Victoria, the Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria jointly hosted a fantastic Workshop at the Trades Hall, Melbourne. The Facilitators Nikole Laupepa and Jacqui Parker did a wonderful job taking all the participant through the #Uluru #Statement of the #Heart and how best the Multicultural community can walk with the 1st Nations People to achieve recognition of the Voice in the Constitution.

Speakers included Dean Parkin (video), who took participants through the 3 elements of the Uluru Statement – #Truth #Treaty #Voice. He also spoke of the role of the people as past, present and future. He spoke that the Voice in the Constitution will be Weaving an #ancient and #modern #Australia together and the Uluru statement is an #invitation to the Australian people and a #gift to the nation of Australia.

For the 1st Nations People, Sovereignty is a spiritual bond between land and its people and that Sovereignty was never ceded. It ios a connection between past present and future.

We heard life stories from Nicole who spoke of the pain that she and her family went through from the racism from people of the medical profession. She said racism against the Aboriginal People was the highest killer. She spoke of how the Aboriginal People were continuously referred to as vulnerable and disadvantaged by many leading to intergenerational trauma and disenfranchisement.

She spoke of the birthing tree and connection of a newborn baby being delivered in a birthing tree and the accumulated grace and wisdom of 65,000 years that flows through the child. Each Child is considered a guardian of all the creations of the Creator.

We were also heard about Makarrata. For Aboriginal peoples it’s never mine or I but Ours.

Finally the message was “#Walk #withUstogether” to get the Voice in the Australian Constitution. We can work together and support the 1st Nations People to achieve this long-needed recognition. Also attending other community leaders, Brad Chilcott Eva Hussain. Sylvia Coombe
