Conference: Interfaith call for Ecocide Law

Faith for Ecocide Conference

Faith for Ecocide Law is creating an interreligious coalition in support of an international crime of Ecocide within the Rome statute of the International Criminal Court.

Humanity is at the crossroads, and faith communities have a unique voice for the reverence for Mother Earth/the Creation, and the existential understanding of the relationship between humans and nature. Faith for Ecocide Law aims at raising this voice in support of new rules for the protection of Nature at a global scale.

End Ecocide Sweden in cooperation with Stop Ecocide Foundation, Christian Council of Sweden, The Catholic Diocese of Stockholm, Sigtuna Foundation and Centre for Environment and Development Studies at Uppsala University will host an Interfaith Conference -Interfaith call for Ecocide Law September 16, 9-12 CET (eastern hemisphere), 16-19 CET (western hemisphere). ONLINE

Faith for Ecocide Law aims at gathering religious and spiritual leaders and voices to express support for a powerful, concrete step to protect Nature: Ecocide law at the International Criminal Court. Also to spread awareness about the issue towards upcoming UN meetings on biodiversity (COP 15, Kunming, October), climate (COP 26, Glasgow, November) and especially Stockholm+50, June 2022, with the thematic focus on how we can redefine our relationship to nature. September 16 will be the launch of the initiative.

The road to accountability and reparations for environmental destruction is closer than before with the ongoing campaign to make #Ecocide, which translates to ‘destroying our home’, an international crime. Religions for Peace proudly supports the Faith for Ecocide Law coalition, which will be launched on September 16. Register for the launch

With the introduction of #Ecocide into legal code, this will lessen the gap of accountability and environmental damage by making mass destruction of environmental areas a punishable crime on the international level. By amending the International Criminal Court’s Rome Statute to include #Ecocide, it will carry the same legal weight as other punishable international crimes such as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.
