Muslim Community Prayers with Victims of Siege

The Islamic Council of Victoria (ICV), the peak body for Muslims in Victoria, says that the community is in deep shock following the dramatic end to the hostage crisis this morning.

The ICV would like to express its deepest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of this tragic event. ICV strongly condemns this and any act of violence perpetrated against innocent people and stands united with every Australian for peaceful and safe society.

Snce the hostage crisis emerged, the ICV has been in communication with partners in the government, police and interfaith organisations, collectively, calling on the broader Australian community to work together in the spirit of peace during this time when the whole nation is grieving.

ICV spokesperson Kuranda Seyit said: “We are still reeling from the shock of how these events have unfolded and we send our condolences to the vicitms of this tragic incident. We pray for the families and hope that they are being supported in this terrible time. Our focus should remain on the victims and our wishes, prayers and thoughts should be with them in this time of need.”

The ICV will continue to foster mutual respect and promote social harmony and cohesion through its ongoing programs and initiatives.

The ICV plans to hold a special gathering this evening at its West Melbourne office at 7pm.
