South Australia: 2018 Catherine Helen Spence Oration

The Unitarian Church of South Australia invites you to attend the inaugural Catherine Helen Spence Oration to be delivered by Prof. Marion Maddox at the Unitarian Meeting House, 99 Osmond Terrace, Norwood on Friday 26th October, commencing at 7pm .

The Catherine Helen Spence Oration commemorates one of the foremost women in Australian history, an influential social activist, political reformer and writer. For the inaugural oration, Macquarie University Professor Marion Maddox will examine how South Australia’s early leadership in education has important lessons for the 21st century.

A central theme of Spence’s activism is the idea of ‘free, compulsory and secular education’. Professor Maddox, the leading authority on the intersection of religion and politics in Australia, will examine why this was such an important concept in the history of Australian public policy; reveal little-known aspects of South Australia’s unique contribution to public education; and discuss how that history is relevant to education debates today.
