In collaboration with the UN Association of Australia and the Australian Institute of International Affairs (ACT), the University of Melbourne’s Initiative for Peacebuilding there will a hybrid event – a roundtable discussion – Hiroshima Day 6 August 2024 – A Summit of the Future.
The roundtable will see the Initiative for Peacebuilding present and discuss briefing papers relating to the Summit, advocate the recommendations in the briefs to Government, and will provide an opportunity for all present to discuss Australia’s participation in the UN of the Future and the UN Peacebuilding Commission.
Topics include:
- Restoring International Peace and Security
- Australian Government’s preparations for the Summit
- Reigning in the Monster: Disarmament
- International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights Law
- Key reforms for the Summit
Speakers will include:
- John Langmore AM, Chair of the Board, Initiative for Peacebuilding
- Adrian Morrice, Former UN officer involved in six UN peacekeeping operations and political missions in Africa and Asia
- Matilda Byrne, Coordinator, Campaign to Stop Killer Robots
- Professor Erika Feller AM FAIIA, former Assistant High Commissioner for Protection with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
- Dr Adam Day, Head of United Nations University Centre for Policy Research, Geneva
Developing the case for Australian action at the Summit of the Future
In preparing for the Summit, the Initiative for Peacebuilding is developing a series of briefing papers on the following five issues on the Summit Agenda, as well as an overview paper on the Summit.

The venue is wheelchair accessible.
