Canberra: Multifaith Prayer Support to COP28

Parliament House CanberraThere will be a show of public prayer support for the UN Conference COP28 on the lawns of Parliament House Canberra on Sunday 26 November and Monday 27 November 2023. The aim of public multi-faith prayer is to show the need for effective responses is a mainstream faith issue. As given in Laudate Deum, Pope Francis will attend COP28 for days 2 to 4.

MULTI-FAITH PRAYER SUPPORT TO COP28

The global community is assembling again in the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Dubai from 30 November 2023. At COP28 there will be a Faith Pavilion to highlight the important role of faith communities in driving action to address the climate crises facing us all. Global Faith Leaders assembled in Dubai for the Pre-COP event “Confluence of Conscience: Uniting Faith Leaders for Planetary Resurgence.” The Dubai Statement on Climate Change was signed at this conference.

Pope Francis’ recent exhortation Laudate Deum to all people of good will is calling for effective action from COP28 to address the dimensions of the climate crises that impacts us all and particularly the most vulnerable. The Pope is dissatisfied with the adequacy of global responses to date and intends to be present at COP28 for three days 1 to 3 December (early in the proceedings).

The Care for Creation movement in the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn will conduct multi-faith prayer in order to show public prayer support for COP28 outcomes as a mainstream faith issue of care for our common home. The movement has received authorisation to assemble for this on the lawns in front of Parliament House at 2.30-4pm on Sunday afternoon 26th November and again at 8-9.30pm on Monday morning 27th November.

As well as participation in the public multi-faith gatherings, individual faith communities may also wish to hold prayer vigil in homes or places of worship for successful outcomes flowing from COP28. Naturally our multi-faith prayer intentions will also include justice and peace in our world.
