This lecture is one of a series of five lectures that will focus on the shared history of the Jewish and First Nations communities. These online lectures are hosted by the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies at the Sydney Jewish Museum.

This week’s lecture will focus on the notion of identity and the ways in which rites of passage connect us with ourselves.

Rites of passage foster a sense of renewal, since they mark the beginning of a new phase in our lives. They remind us that we are constantly evolving and that life is a transformative journey. Ceremonies that function as rites of passage connect us with our past selves, but also with the past of our forebears. These ceremonies are passed from one generation to the next, in a flow that evokes the continuity of life, and reminds us of our place in the great scheme of things.

This lecture will be hosted by Dr Simon Holloway, with Tom Powell and Sandy Hollis in conversation.
