1st Assembly on Women, Faith & Diplomacy: Keeping Faith and Transforming Tomorrow

Religions for Peace International 50 years logoReligions for Peace is partnering with the Foundation Peace Dialogue of the World Religions and Civil Society (Ring for Peace) to deliver the first international Assembly on Women, Faith and Diplomacy, which will be convened from 10-13 November 2020.

The international Assembly entitled Keeping Faith and Transforming Tomorrow will focus on the nexus of gender, faith and diplomacy, and will be co-convened in Lindau, Germany, with the Foundation Peace Dialogue of the World Religions and Civil Society (Ring for Peace), and supported by the German Federal Foreign Office (Ministry of Foreign Affairs).

The year 2020 with the unprecedented global health crisis caused by the spread of the novel virus COVID-19 forced each and every one of us to adapt our way of living in various ways. We as conveners of the Assembly were also confronted with the task to take new measures, adapt to the challenges, think of new solutions for international gatherings and dialogues. What occurred as tremendous challenge on a global scale also bears the opportunity to create a virtual space for an even greater number of participants of the Religions for Peace movement and its long-standing and new partners to join the Assembly virtually to discuss and work together on issues of global relevance.

Celebrating Religions for Peace’s 50th anniversary in 2020, and building on the successful convening of 900 religious leaders and delegates on the occasion of the Religions for Peace’s 10th World Assembly in August 2019, this Assembly will be despite – or maybe because of – its virtual nature, be just as global in scale, multi-religious in composition, and representing stakeholders from various fields ranging from intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental/civil society.

Diplomacy is a timeless skill. In a world in need for co-operation to deal with a global health pandemic, which has already claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands, and facing more conflicts than recorded in modern history, the need for renewed, refined and urgent diplomacy could not be greater. Women of Faith spanning all religions and regions play critical roles in ensuring peace and security, development, and human rights. As professionals in diverse fields, as religious leaders in their own right, and as leaders in their religious and civic communities, their contributions and perspectives are critical to successful interventions in each and every human endeavour.
