Prime Minister’s Message for Eid al Adha 2020

Scott Morrison - Prime Minister

Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon. Scott Morrison MP gives one message to Australia’s Muslims on occasion of this time of social distancing and Islamic religious celebration, a festival by name Eid-al-Adha.

Eid Mubarak to all who celebrate Eid al-Adha, the holy festival of sacrifice.

This time last year, I reflected on the great riches of respect and kindness that the Muslim community brings to Australia’s cultural landscape. None of us then could have predicted how important those virtues would be in facing the challenges of recent months.

I send my warm thanks for your understanding and efforts at this difficult time. We have worked patiently as a nation to face the challenges and share the burden resulting from this pandemic.

For now, the ways that we celebrate and gather together as families and faith communities are different. But the crucial elements of our society – our unity and our commitment to each other – remain the same. What sets us apart as Australians, in all our many cultures and faiths, is the way that we have worked together and supported each other.

As a commemoration of sacrifice, Eid al-Adha speaks eloquently to the sacrifices of recent months. But even in this dreadful crisis, the ongoing rituals of our lives – sharing prayer and sharing time with our loved ones – give us meaning and purpose.

Celebrations such as these are an opportunity to experience the meaning of faith. I know that your faith, as a guide and a light in your lives, will continue to support you and your community.

During this difficult time, and with the spirit of this great festival of sacrifice and charity, I know you will play your part and reach out to those around you with comfort and support.

Through your efforts and sacrifice, you are living out your faith and making a difference to your community and to our country.

Eid Mubarak!
