There will be a panel discussion after speeches. This will be a hybrid event.
Racism and Social Cohesion
Racism is the belief that one race is superior to another, leading to discrimination, prejudice, and unequal treatment of individuals based on their racial or ethnic background. It can be systemic (embedded in institutions), interpersonal (between individuals), or internalized (when individuals accept negative stereotypes about their own group). Racism manifests in various ways, including segregation, racial profiling, hate speech, and socioeconomic disparities.
Social cohesion refers to the strength of relationships and sense of unity among members of a society. It is built on mutual respect, trust, shared values, and equal opportunities for all. A socially cohesive society fosters inclusivity, economic stability, and peaceful coexistence.
Racism is one of the biggest barriers to social cohesion.
1. Erosion of Trust – Discrimination and racial bias weaken trust between communities, making it difficult for people to work together.
2. Economic Disparities – Racism often leads to inequality in employment, wages, and access to opportunities, creating divisions in society.
3. Social Exclusion – Marginalized groups may feel disconnected or alienated, reducing their participation in social, economic, and political life.
4. Political Instability – Racial tensions can lead to protests, conflicts, and even violence, disrupting peace and governance.
5. Weakened National Identity – A divided society struggles to develop a collective sense of belonging and national pride.
To overcome racism and build a cohesive society, consider the following:
• Education & Awareness – Teaching about racism, cultural diversity, and inclusion to promote understanding.
• Legal Protection – Implementing and enforcing anti-discrimination laws.
• Equal Opportunities – Ensuring fair access to jobs, education, and public services.
• Community Engagement – Encouraging dialogue and collaboration between diverse groups.
• Media Responsibility – Promoting positive representations of different racial and ethnic groups.
By addressing racism, societies can move toward greater unity, fairness, and shared prosperity, strengthening social cohesion for everyone.
