The Canberra Interfaith Forum (CIF), representing a diverse group of faith communities in the Canberra region, stands united in condemning the recent attack on a synagogue in Melbourne. We express our deepest concern and sorrow over this heinous act of violence that targeted a place of worship and sanctuary for the Jewish community.
We are deeply disturbed that an institution meant for prayer, reflection, and community building was violated in such a manner. The desecration of a synagogue not only harms the Jewish community but also undermines the very foundation of mutual respect, tolerance, and peace that we, as a society, strive to uphold. This attack is not only an assault on the Jewish community but an attack on the values that bind us together as Australians, irrespective of our faith backgrounds.
As members of an interfaith community, we recognise the importance of standing in solidarity with our Jewish brothers and sisters during this difficult time. Antisemitism, like all forms of hate and discrimination, must be unequivocally condemned. We call upon all members of society, as well as law enforcement, to bring the perpetrators of this despicable act to justice.
We also urge our leaders and institutions to reaffirm their commitment to fostering an inclusive and respectful society, one where every individual, regardless of their religion or background, can live without fear of violence or persecution.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Adass Israel synagogue and the entire Jewish community. We remain steadfast in our commitment to peace, understanding, and coexistence, and we will continue to work toward creating a society free from hate.
