The Faith Communities Network of Tasmania met online on Sunday 21 March. Many leaders of faith communities (Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, Sikh, Hindu, Shia, Brahma Kumaris, Baha’i) were present and spoke about their experience of being a faith community leader in times of lockdown. Religions for Peace was also represented with the Chair, Emeritus Professor Des Cahill OAM giving an address at the conclusion of the meet.

Greetings of Peace! We hope everyone is breathing a sigh of relief, as we are, that the summer in Tasmania has been cool and we have been blessed that the bushfire season has been milder than it has been in recent years.
In connection with supporting Mother Earth, Religions for Peace Tasmania will be joining the International initiative of Greenfaith: Sacred People, Sacred Earth – GreenFaith. We will join members of The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) at 11am on Thursday 11 March 21 in the garden next to the Quaker Meeting House, Boa Vista Rd, New Town.

Greetings of peace and many good wishes for the year ahead!
This week is UN World Interfaith Harmony Week, a celebration to promote a culture of peace and non-violence, particularly among people of faith.
It’s so important to celebrate the small acts of kindness that happen every day between people of different faiths to support one another in our daily lives and especially during difficult times.
We share a message honouring UN World Interfaith Harmony Week from the Chair of Religions for Peace Australia, Emeritus Professor Desmond Cahill OAM, and a link to a message from the President of the Parliament of the World’s Religions announcing events which may be accessed online during February.
There is also a letter from Cardinal Charles Maung Bo, Co-President of Religions for Peace International, to his countrymen in Myanmar after the coup which occurred there recently.

Religions for Peace Tasmania Branch gives report on its activities for the latter part of Year 2020, along with plans for creation of a Compassionate City for Hobart, to culminate on UN Peace Day, 2021.

Many good wishes for the holy days coming up for many faith traditions: Hanukkah (Jewish Festival of Lights), the Summer Solstice, Christmas, including the Orthodox celebrations and the many different New Years.
This is always a special time of the year, partly because it brings families together (and our blessing is that we can come together at this time) and partly because of the opportunity it gives us for quietness and reflection.
May you, your families and your communities stay safe and well, happy and prosperous over these next few weeks and enjoy a peaceful, healthy and happy start to 2021.

Greetings of peace and many blessings for the beautiful festival of Diwali, the Festival of Lights, which is today, 14 November 20! As the victory of light over darkness, it remembers not that darkness was destroyed, but that it was subsumed back into divinity. For many it is the start of the Hindu New Year.
We would also like to honour the memory of Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, a moral and intellectual giant and member of the Jewish faith. A brief obituary which came from JCCV is included. We hope that all of you, your families and communities continue to be safe and well as the year comes to peaceful close!

Our event for Religions for Peace Tasmania branch in October will be to join in with the Religions for Peace Australia Prayers for the Nation, which will be held by Zoom on Sunday 18 October 2020 at 5.00pm. Religious leaders from many faiths around Australia will be offering prayers. Kris Schaffer from Tasmania will be offering thoughts from our First Nation People’s perspective.
Womens International League for Peace and Freedom Tasmanian Branch Centenary
The Womens International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) Tasmanian Branch invites you, your family and friends, to a Soup and Sandwich luncheon on Friday 4 December 2020 (12.30-2.30 pm) to celebrate the Centenary of our Branch of WILPF Australia and Human Right’s Week.
Flatpack coffins help the environment, funeral costs and the grieving process
A group in Tasmania is trying to lift the lid on funeral expenses. Members have been making DIY coffins from wood but are now branching into cardboard; They say it’s cheaper, more environmentally friendly and can come as a flatpack.

Greetings of peace! A group of interested people have begun to investigate the possibility of Hobart signing on to the Charter for Compassion and thereby taking up the challenge of becoming a Compassionate City. Australia signed on to the Charter in 2010. The aim of Charter for Compassion Australia is for Australia to become a Continent for Compassion by 21 September 21, but before that, there is the hope that interested capital cities will commit to the initiative.
