Quakers Australia: Update for Friends during the Coronavirus Disruption

Australian Yearly MeetingQuakers Australia are posting here ongoing updates on decisions and resources to support Friends and their local meetings in caring for one another and their neighbours during this health crisis.

WITHIN AYM: CANCELLATIONS / POSTPONEMENTS / CLOSURES

  • New South Wales Regional Meeting: Each Meeting will make its own decision about in-person meetings, and have the option of changing to an online meeting for worship, should that be needed.
  • Queensland Regional Meeting: Darling Downs Recognised Meeting has stopped Meeting for Worship. Individuals in other meetings are currently self isolating. Using Zoom for Meeting for Worship is being investigated.
  • Tasmania Regional Meeting taken the difficult decision to stop worshipping together in Tasmania until further notice. This includes ALL meetings and worshipping groups and is effective immediately. Please see the TRM webpage for additional information.
  • Victoria Regional Meeting: Each Meeting will make its own decision about in-person meetings. Northern Suburbs Local Meeting will not have access to the Library due to its closure, so will not meet for the present;
  • The Quaker Shop (Adelaide, South Australia) will close until further notice, from Monday 23 March. “Most of our volunteers are in the high risk category, and we must look after them.”

BEYOND AYM: FRIENDS OVERSEAS

  • Aotearoa/New Zealand Yearly Meeting has cancelled its Annual Gathering which had been scheduled for Thursday, 23 April 2020 – Monday, 27 April 2020

Online Meetings for Worship

  • The Australia Yearly Meeting for Worship via Zoom is now a weekly event during the COVID-19 disruption (rather than once a month as it previously had been), as some F/friends may feel uncomfortable gathering in a group. You can join either by computer or phone, Details are available on the webpage: https://www.quakersaustralia.info/online-meeting-worship
  • The FWCC-AWPS Section Meeting for Worship Online is held on the second and fourth Thursday of every month at 5pm Australia Eastern Standard Time. Contact michael.searle@iinet.net.au for information and to join.
  • Silver Wattle Quaker Centre offers online Meeting for Worship. Contact Sheila Keane at sheila.keane@silverwattle.org.au for information.
  • Woodbrooke Study Centre (UK Friends) offers a 30-minute online worship every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. NOTE: Woodbrooke expects demand for online worship to be high as a result of the COVID-19 disruption. Please be patient as large numbers may affect their norma practices.

This page will be updated as news and resources become available.
