Baany to Warrna Ngargee – Water to Water Festival

The Baany to Warrna Ngargee – Water to Water Festival includes Traditional Pitjantjatjara man, Frank Yamma, and takes place on 21 March on Boon Wurrung country at the Briars Park, Mt Martha. This coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Cultural Diversity Week and Harmony Day.

The festival is a non-profit endeavour, which aims to promote cross-cultural relationships, human rights and diversity. The program will include performers from the Peninsula and different parts of Australia and the globe to mark the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Harmony Day and Cultural Diversity Week.

Described by the Guardian UK as ‘epic and soulful’, Yamma has toured Australia and internationally, captivating audiences with his heartfelt lyrics in both English and his Pitjantjatjara language.

Australian rock music singer-songwriter, radio presenter and TV personality, Ella Hooper will also be performing at this year’s festival. Hooper won four ARIA Awards in 2000 as a member of Killing Heidi.

Children’s activities include didgeridoo playing, canvas painting, book publishing, art workshops, face painting, learning about bush tucker and simply exploring the stunning natural beauty of the Briars park.

There will be opportunities to learn more about the local Indigenous history, art and culture from members of Willum Warrain Gathering Place, Nairm Marr Djambana, Baluk Arts and community members.

Meals will be available from a select group of food vendors, including renowned festival caterer Jerry’s Vegiburgers, local produce and a range of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and crafts.

As part of a broader program, the festival will conduct lead-in events such as workshops and cultural activities in the build up to the main festival day. Indigenous dance and art workshops will run through schools and local community groups.
