Palm Sunday: A Walk for Justice for Refugees

PALM SUNDAY WALK FOR JUSTICE FOR REFUGEES

PALM SUNDAY WALK FOR JUSTICE FOR REFUGEES

The Palm Sunday Walk Organisation Committee – a broad coalition of community groups, churches and unions – invites you to join with other well-known people to lead this year’s traditional Palm Sunday Peace March: A Walk for Justice for Refugees.

The Walk event will start at the State Library, corner Swanston and Latrobe Streets, Melbourne at 2pm ( gathering from 1.30pm) and we expect to be finished by 3.30 – 4pm.

Following the recent tragic events on Manus Island we believe many Australians are ready to take a stand against Australia’s treatment of people who seek asylum.

This Walk is being organised to advocate a new approach to asylum seekers: Welcoming, rather than sending refugees offshore for processing, or holding them in detention centres; We believe processing should be fair and timely with permanent visas issued to those found to be refugees; We are against the deportation of asylum seekers back to places of danger and strongly believe that Australia should resettle more asylum seekers and refugees.

We are inviting well-known people from various faith groups, musicians, writers, entertainers, media personalities, union representatives and sportspeople to lead the peaceful walk through the Melbourne city centre. We believe this will give strength to our cause for more humane and compassionate refugee policies. See also http://facebook.com/palmsundaywalk

  • We believe that everyone has the right to a life that is free from persecution and life-threatening situations
  • We seek to live in a society that is shaped by compassion and justice for all people including those seeking asylum in Australia
  • We affirm the right of asylum seekers to live a dignified, meaningful and safe existence while their claims for protection are being processed
  • We believe Australia can and should be more generous and provide resettlement and permanent protection to many more refugees and people seeking asylum
