The Effects of Meditation on Mental Health

Dr Fred Travis, visiting Australia from 10 to 22 June. Dr Travis will speak on research carried out in the context of spirituality and mental/physical health on the 14th June 7-9pm at Prana House Thornbury Melbourne.

For more than 20 years, Dr Travis has been a pioneer in research on Transcendental Meditation (TM) and is currently the Director of the Center for Brain, Consciousness and Cognition at Maharishi University of Management (MUM) in Iowa, named in honour of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the Founder of Transcendental Meditation. In the past 20 years the US National Institutes of Health has awarded more than $24 million to study the benefits of TM for improving brain functioning and cardiovascular health. Dr Travis and his colleagues at MUM have been key players in this research program. Recently, MUM was awarded a grant of $2.4 million by the US Veterans Administration to conduct a four year study on the impact of TM on PTSD in veterans from the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts.

Dr Travis will speak about a range of topics which include:

  • The impact of TM on the parasympathetic nervous system and stress hormones.
  • TM and spirituality – the psychology of higher states of consciousness and enlightenment.
  • Research on the benefits of TM for anxiety, depression, traumatic stress, substance abuse.
  • Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s teaching of spirituality and health.
