Victoria: Asia-Pacific Catholicism and Globalization: Conference
The Institute for Religion, Politics and Society at the ACU will conduct a scholarly conference with outstanding international guests reflecting on Globalisation, Catholicism and Interreligious Dialogue in the Asia-Pacific region. It will be held at Australian Catholic University in Melbourne from 28 to 30 June 2017.
The Conference is the culmination of a three-year research project co-sponsored by the Institute for Religion, Politics and Society (IRPS) of ACU and the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs of Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.
Co-directed by Professor José Casanova, Professorial Fellow of IRPS, ACU and Professor of Sociology and Theology, Georgetown University, and by Professor Peter Phan, Ignacio Ellacuria Professor of Theology, Georgetown University.
The project gathers fifteen prominent scholars of Catholicism to study the inter-relations between the development of Catholicism in Asia and three distinctive phases of globalization in the Asia-Pacific Region from the 16th century to the present.
In addition to its primary research and academic purpose, the project also seeks to enhance and strengthen academic and scholarly networks among Catholic universities across the Asia-Pacific region, as well as with other Catholic institutions throughout the world.
Keynote Speakers include:
– Professor Jose Casanova
– Archbishop Felix Machado (Archbishop of Vasai, India)
– Archbishop Antonio Ledesma SJ (Archbishop of Cagayan de Oro, Philippines)
This conference will begin with a Keynote address Vatican II and the Asian/Pacific Church: Unfinished Agenda at 6pm on Wednesday 28th June.
It will provide a significant professional development opportunity to hear from and meet with key figures in the scholarship of Catholicism in the Asia-Pacific.
