International Day of Peace

Religions for Peace will be partnering with many organisations worldwide on World Day of Peace, 2016. As we know, achieving a more peaceful world is a shared responsibility and it is only through our collective efforts, actions large and small, that we will persevere in creating a safer, more just world for all people.

International Day of Peace

Dear Esteemed Partners in Peace:

“When we all work together, we can make peace possible, starting with 24 hours of peace on 21 September” — these are the words of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and a conviction we hope you will join in turning into a reality this International Day of Peace. As we know, achieving a more peaceful world is a shared responsibility and it is only through our collective efforts, actions large and small, that we will persevere in creating a safer, more just world for all people.

This year, to celebrate the International Day of Peace and honor the Secretary-General’s call, we are focusing on bringing 24 hours of nonviolence to as many places around the world as possible on 21 September. In collaboration with a number of partners, including the U.S. Institute of Peace, American University, Peace First and change.org, we hope to generate 24 hours of peace in cities and communities around the world by raising public awareness, building relationships, and influencing leaders. Catalyzing 24 hours of peace is a critical first step in demonstrating the potential for sustainable peace around the world.

Global partners are aligning to transform the International Day of Peace 2016 from a single moment of action to a movement of non-violence that will continue to build beyond the day. An irreplaceable component of this effort will be the engagement of people of faith who are already committed and working hard to bring peace to their communities. This ambitious movement will be stronger with your leadership. Please join us in making 24 hours of peace a reality on 21 September.

Over the coming weeks, we will share more about this effort. We look forward to hearing from you about the most effective ways to generate peace in your communities. Together, our work will bring us closer to much-needed world peace during these troubled times.
