The Jain Community of South Australia will celebrate the birthday of Mahavir at the Ganesh Temple at Oaklands Park on Sunday 13th April from 1pm to 4 pm

An invitation has come from our friends who practice the Jain Religion. In Jainism, Mahavir Jayanti (Birthday of Mahavir), also known as Mahavir Janma Kalyanak, is the most important religious holiday. It celebrates the birth of Mahavira, the last Tirthankara. In the Gregorian calendar, the holiday occurs either in March or April.

You are invited to attend the Ganesh Temple (3A Dwyer Rd Oaklands Park, SA, 5046) on Sunday 13th April from 1pm to 4 pm.

You can bring your friends and families if they are interested.

  • 2:15 Prof Purnendra Jain will first speak about Mahavir Jayanti followed by some bhajans.
  • 2:30 – 3:00 Bhajans
  • 3:00 – 4:00Â (Refreshments)

Jainism is an Indian religion that prescribes a path of non-violence towards all living beings and emphasizes spiritual independence and equality between all forms of life. Practitioners believe that non-violence and self-control are the means by which they can obtain liberation.

The Navkar Mantra is the most important mantra in Jainism. While reciting the Navkar Mantra, we are bowing down with respect  Arihantas, Siddhas, Acharya(heads of sadhus and sadhvis), Upadhyaya  (those who teach scriptures to sadhus and sadhvis),  Sadhus  (monks, who have voluntarily given up social, economical and family relationships)  and Sadhvis  (nuns, who have voluntarily given up social, economical and family relationships). Collectively, they are called Panch Parmesthi (five supreme spiritual people). In this mantra we worship their virtues rather than worshipping any one particular person or Tirthankar. This mantra is also called  Namaskar or Namokar Mantra as we are bowing down.
